Marmorera - Alp Flix - Savognin
on the Veia Surmirana
Alp Flix, inhabited all year round, is today one of the 88 Swiss moorlands of outstanding beauty and national importance. It has been protected since 1995.
Route description
We follow the path in a northerly direction from the start point. We cross the slope above Marmorera Lake through picturesque larch woodland, through which we can catch the occasional glimpse of the Marmel ruins. Once on the moorland, we reach the now disused iron ore mining area of Gruba, and then, after a short climb, arrive in Salategnas, the first settlement on the plateau of the impressive Alp Flix. The hike continues through Cuorts to the "Lais Blovs" (blue lakes), and then on through sparse woodland to Plang da Crousch, with one of the most stunning viewpoints in the valley. On the descending path – the Veia Surmirana – we pass by several "Maiensässe", traditional wooden dwellings, and descend somewhat more steeply down in the direction of Tinizong to Savognin.

Other information
In the year 2000, on Biodiversity Day (GEO-Tag der Artenvielfalt), scientists found 2,092 species within 24 hours and a mere 6 km2 area – amongst which there were many surprises and one sensation: a hitherto unknown species of dung gnat named “Rhexoza” which was found in the scree. Its nearest relatives are to be found in North America.
